(Ergänzt) R.I.P. Kevin Conroy - Batman verstummt

.

KEVIN CONROY, PREEMINENT VOICE OF BATMAN, PASSES AWAY AT AGE 66

NEW YORK, NY (November 11, 2022) - Actor Kevin Conroy, the most beloved voice of Batman in the animated history of the character, died Thursday at age 66 after a short battle with cancer.

A noted stage, film and television performer, Conroy rose to unparalleled voice acting fame as the title character of the landmark Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1996). He would establish never-to-be-broken records as the quintessential voice of Batman, bringing the Super Hero to animated life in nearly 60 different productions, including 15 films – highlighted by the acclaimed Batman: Mask of the Phantasm; 15 animated series, spanning nearly 400 episodes and more than 100 hours of television; as well as two dozen video games. Conroy was also featured as a live-action Bruce Wayne in the Arrowverse’s 2019-2020 “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event.

In recent years, Conroy was a notable fixture on the Con circuit, greeting fans with the same warmth, respect and enthusiasm they reserved for him.

“Kevin was far more than an actor whom I had the pleasure of casting and directing – he was a dear friend for 30+ years whose kindness and generous spirit knew no boundaries,” said Emmy Award winning casting/dialogue director Andrea Romano. “Kevin’s warm heart, delightfully deep laugh and pure love of life will be with me forever.”

Mark ("Joker") & Kevin ("Batman")

“Kevin was perfection,” recalled Mark Hamill, who redefined the Joker playing opposite Conroy’s Batman. “He was one of my favorite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother. He truly cared for the people around him – his decency shone through everything he did. Every time I saw him or spoke with him, my spirits were elevated.”

Born on November 30, 1955 in Westbury, New York, and raised in Westport, CT, Conroy began establishing himself in the acting community while under the tutelage of John Houseman at The Julliard School – where he studied alongside the likes of Christopher Reeve, Frances Conroy, and his roommate Robin Williams

Conroy began his career following his love of the theatre, keeping him on stage in both New York and at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. The actor received rave reviews for his starring performances in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Public Theater, Eastern Standard on Broadway, Arthur Miller’s The Last Yankee, and in the title role of Hamlet at the 1984 New York Shakespeare Festival.

Kevin als Bart Fallmont, (dann späterer) Lebenspartner von Steven in DYNASTY Season 6 (1986)

In addition, he performed in films and television – most notably in the mid-1980s when he had recurring roles on Dynasty ("Der Denver-Clan"), Tour of Duty and Ohara (liefen damals alle auch im deutschen Fernsehen!); successful runs on soap operas Search for Tomorrow and Another World; and guest roles on popular series like Cheers, Murphy Brown, Spenser: For Hire and Matlock (auch diese alle im dt. tv gelaufen)

als tv-producer in "Murphy Brown"

But it was his incomparable, nuanced performance as the voice of Batman that put Conroy on the map – and the fans’ radar – when Batman: The Animated Series debuted on September 5, 1992 (ein Jahr später im deutschen TV bei ProSieben). From that point on, Conroy would forever be linked to the Dark Knight – in TV series like Batman Beyond and Justice League/Justice League Unlimited (im deutschen TV bei kabeleins); films ranging from Batman: the Killing Joke and Batman: Gotham Knight to Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero and Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman; and more than two dozen video games.

"The Face Of Fear", Kevin als Psycho-Killer

Als "Bruce Wayne" einer Parallel-Erde im CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Event (2019/20)

“Kevin was a brilliant actor,” Hamill said. “For several generations, he has been the definitive Batman. It was one of those perfect scenarios where they got the exact right guy for the exact right part, and the world was better for it. His rhythms and subtleties, tones and delivery – that all also helped inform my performance. He was the ideal partner – it was such a complementary, creative experience. I couldn’t have done it without him. He will always be my Batman.”

“Kevin brought a light with him everywhere,” said Paul Dini, producer of Batman: The Animated Series, “whether in the recording booth giving it his all, or feeding first responders during 9/11, or making sure every fan who ever waited for him had a moment with their Batman. A hero in every sense of the word. Irreplaceable. Eternal.”

Conroy is survived by his husband Vaughn C. Williams, sister Trisha Conroy, and brother Tom Conroy. Memorial services are pending.

(Updates -4- ) R.I.P.

Fan-Liebling Fing Fang Foom & Black Panther in Aktion...

We mourn the loss of a dear part of the Marvel family, comic artist and writer Carlos Pacheco. His legacy of iconic designs and storytelling like Avengers Forever, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Excalibur, Captain America, and more will be remembered. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.”

DC Comics Statement: “Carlos Pacheco was a visionary artist who whose contributions to the Superman, Green Lantern and the JLA/JSA legacies will have a lasting impact on the industry. DC offers its sincere condolences to his family, friends, fans and many collaborators.”

Image Comics' Rob Liefeld: "I'm so very saddened by the loss of Carlos Pacheco. His immense talent brightened every comic he illustrated. Such a beautiful and kind man. Rest In Peace, Carlos. Gone way too soon."

Autor Kurt Busiek:Avengers Forever exists because of Carlos Pacheco. He was up for a contract renewal, and he told Bob Harras that he wanted two things: He wanted to do an Avengers project and he wanted me to write it.

At this point, we’d never worked together, and had barely met. Bob called me, and asked me if I was up for the project. I was hugely flattered, and told Bob that I had no time (this was very true), but for the chance to work with Carlos, I would make time...

...Our collaboration and friendship built on that… It was always a great time working with Carlos. I’m so very sorry we won’t be doing more, but I’ll always have those years, those conversations, that energy.”

Autor Chris Claremont: “This is so unfair and wrong. He was an artist of such ability, a friend to be embraced. This, like too many others this year, is a last train that should have been stopped before leaving the station. A better booking should have been made, a better deal cut with Higher Authority. It’s just not fair – as should have been said re George [Perez] & Neal [Adams]. To his family, Beth’s & my deepest condolences."

Update (3)

Carlos Pacheco (aus seinem letzten Interview vom September):

“The final diagnostic has made it clear: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease), aka ALS.  It is what it is, and it is what needs to be dealt with. It’s true that this is an unexpected turn of events in my life, but this doesn’t make me feel less fortunate to have lived the life I have lived, for the experiences I’ve had, the achievements I’ve made, and the people I’ve been fortunate to cross paths with. In truth, it’s been a life that’s gone beyond my wildest childhood dreams.

Thank you to everyone who has been here. Let’s keep going as always!”

70 Jahre LECHZ & WÜRG! Das "MAD Magazine" wird nächsten Monat 70 Jahre jung!

70 Jahre MAD (Bildnachweis: DC)

Ein neuer „Another Look at MAD“ von Maestro Sergio Aragonés

Writer and artist Dan Jurgens provided the below statement on the legacy of The Death of Superman and the upcoming release of The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1:

Even now, 30 years after the "Death of Superman” first came out, every single convention or store appearance I do has at least one person who comes up to me with Superman #75 or the first “Death of Superman” collected edition and says, “This is the book that got me into comics. And I’m still here, reading, all these years later.” Most times, it’s more than one. Sometimes, multiple people arrive at my table at the same time and share their memories, which is always fun to experience.

Their tales are often quite similar. Typically, media coverage of Superman’s death compelled them or a parent to drop by a local store to pick [the issue] up. In some cases, their parents let them skip school the day of the book's release so they could stand in line to get a copy. Some talk of how their store was sold out and they spent days looking all over town to find one.

I’m not alone in that experience. It’s common for the entire team of writers and artists who worked on Superman at the time. It was a singularly unique moment in comics, when a particular story was covered by every form of national and local media alike.

It’s hard to tell people what those days were like, but every comic shop in the country had long lines of people outside the door waiting to buy THAT BOOK.

All these years later, it’s a great pleasure to get back together with the story’s original creative teams to celebrate a truly exciting time in comics. For those of you who remember those days, The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special will reignite some memories. For those who weren’t around to experience it, well…we hope you get a hint of what it was like.

Most of all, we hope all of you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it all together.
