Bis dato war's nur ein unbestätigtes Gerücht...

vereinzelt tauchten in vergangenen Monaten auch immer wieder Character-Sketches, gestaltet von populären Comic-Künstlern, auf Comic-Newssites auf... (die diese Abb. stets, auf Betreiben von Warner Brothers Rechtsanwälten wieder vom Netz nehmen mußten).

Jetzt hat DC ENTERTAINMENT "offiziell" die Veröffentlichung von insgesamt 8 WATCHMEN - Limited Series (Mini-Serien) angekündigt, die da wären:

Jede der genannten Mini-Serien wird aus 4 bis 6 Heften bestehen; die Erscheinungstermine der Titel werden ähnlich abgestimmt wie vor einigen Jahren bei Autor Grant Morrison's SEVEN SOLDIERS Mini-Serien; d.h., über mehrere Monate hinweg wird es JEDE WOCHE -!- ein Heft aus diesen "BEFORE WATCHMEN" Reihen zu erwerben geben! -wow!-

Entertainment- & Branchen- Bibel THR / The Hollywood Reporter hat diesen Veröffentlichungen einen sehr ausführlichen Beitrag gewidmet (unbedingt lesen!), in dem einige Beteiligte auch zu Wort kommen (etwa Dan Didio, Jim Lee und im ausführlichen Interview am Ende des Beitrags "Babylon 5" -Creator J.Michael Straczynsky!)

"...DC, which owns the characters, is now saying that enough time has passed that it's okay to explore new stories featuring the Watchmen.

"It's our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant," said DC Entertainment co-publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee in a statement. "After twenty five years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told.

The company has also enlisted the blessing of Gibbons, a move that should mollify many fans. “The original series of Watchmen is the complete story that Alan Moore and I wanted to tell. However, I appreciate DC's reasons for this initiative and the wish of the artists and writers involved to pay tribute to our work. May these new additions have the success they desire,” he said in his statement.

Auszug aus dem Interview mit J.M. Straczynski
("Dr. Manhattan", "Nite Owl", "Superman: Earth One") :

THR: ...How do you think this will be judged and accepted considering 1) Alan Moore's stance against continuing the Watchmen universe, and 2) the sacred hold Watchmen has on readers?

JMS: The perception that these characters shouldn’t be touched by anyone other than Alan is both absolutely understandable and deeply flawed. As good as these characters are – and they are very good indeed – one could make the argument, based on durability and recognition, that Superman is the greatest comics character ever created.

But I don’t hear Alan or anyone else suggesting that no one other than Shuster and Siegel should have been allowed to write Superman. Certainly Alan himself did this when he was brought on to write Swamp Thing, a seminal comics character created by Len Wein.

Leaving aside the fact that the Watchmen characters were variations on pre-existing characters created for the Charleton Comics universe, it should be pointed out that Alan has spent most of the last decade writing very good stories about characters created by other writers, including Alice (from Alice in Wonderland), Dorothy (from Wizard of normal">Oz), Wendy (from Peter Pan), as well as Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man, Jeyll and Hyde, and Professor Moriarty (used in the successful League of Extraordinary Gentlemen).

I think one loses a little of the moral high ground to say, “I can write characters created by Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle and Frank Baum, but it’s wrong for anyone else to write my characters...”

Desweiteren gibt es Äußerungen zu möglichen weiteren Fortsetzungen der WATCHMEN, der Rolle des "Watchmen Universe" innerhalb von DCs "Multiverse" (DC Fans erinnern sich: DCs Multiverse besteht derzeit aus 52 "einzelnen" Universen) u.v.m.

“To me, a reboot is what DC is essentially doing with the New 52, which is changing costumes, origins, relationships, essentially looking at old characters through new eyes. ...What we’re doing is filling in a lot of the blank spaces in a story that has already, to some degree, been told. There were still a lot of gaps in the histories of Watchmen‘s characters, and events only mentioned in passing or touched on briefly in the original story. We’re filling in those gaps in the most creative and inventive ways we can...”

Publikations- Historischer Hintergrund
der WATCHMEN Charactere:

Die Original WATCHMEN, von DC Comics Mitte der 80er Jahre als 12-teilige Mini-Serie veröffentlicht, waren ursprünglich von Master Mind-Autor Alan Moore und Zeichner Dave Gibbons als Abgesang auf die sogenannten "Charlton Action Heroes" gedacht; Super- Helden- Charactere des zuvor pleite gegangenen Verlags Charlton, deren Verwertungsrechte einst von DC erworben wurden.

Als die WATCHMEN-Serie noch im Planungsstadium war, baten die DC Redakteure den Autoren Moore, aus den Charlton-Helden "ähnlich-wirkende" Figuren zu kreieren, da DC bewußt war, das die in Watchmen auftretenden Charactere nach ihrem Einsatz in dieser Geschichte "verbrannt" sein würden für noch gemeinsame Auftritte mit Superman, Batman & Co, denn der Verlag hatte mit den erworbenen Original- Charlton- Characteren eigentlich noch anderes im Sinne...


So gestaltete das Team Moore/ Gibbons aus Charlton's "Captain Atom" Watchmen's DR. MANHATTAN, aus Charlton's "Blue Beetle" wurde Watchmen's NITE OWL...

Wer die klassischen Original-Stories der "Charlton Action Heroes" gelesen hat (erhältlich z.B. innerhalb der DC ARCHIVES Buch-Reihe!), erkennt recht schnell, das diese die direkten Vorlagen/ Vorgänger der WATCHMEN Figuren sind.
